Why I Bought The Worst MacBook Ever, Twice
Reassure me
I’ve made a mistake. The same mistake. Multiple times. I’m not an idiot, though. Let me explain my thinking.
The mistakes
The initial mistake
Back in 2016 I needed to buy a Macbook to replace my ageing Macbook Air. I needed to use it for iOS coding (clearly) and also any computer activities that my iPad and iPhone wouldn’t be able to handle. I did think about using a Hackintosh (2016, after all) but the new Macbook Pro 13" had quite a few tempting features:
- The new Touchbar
- All new design
- Lovely large trackpad
Sure, the ports had been replaced for their USB-C equivalents, but with 4 and a dongle or two this was nothing I couldn’t overcome.
I understood that 8Gb of ram and 256Gb SSD space wouldn’t be enough for the life I expected of the laptop. I upgraded both, and with Apple’s education discount and claiming back the VAT paid around £1.7k, which at the time would be around $2.5k I guess.
The performance was mediocre, but I felt sure I’d get a good 7 years use out of it so it would be fine.
